Huacachina Desert Oasis - 2 Days at Huacachina Oasis

Huacachina Desert Oasis Detailed Overview

We spent 48 hours adventuring through the incredible natural landscapes of Peru. This is one side-trip you DEFINITELY don’t want to miss!
How we did this in 2 days: We rented a car from Avis in Lima, and it cost us roughly $190 usd for the 2 days. A bus is also a great option (and cheaper), but we wanted the flexibility of stopping in at some of the coastal towns along the way. The traffic in Lima can get pretty crazy, so try and leaving around 6am or 7am to beat the morning rush. Outside the city the drive was an easy cruise along a well maintained highway. The drive took us about 4.5 hours and we stayed at Banana’s Adventure Hostel – awesome place with a great vibe, a small pool to take a dip in the desert heat, and a good home base to take trips from. We walked around the small town and up some of the nearest sand dunes for a few hours (not really much else to see or do), and did a sand boarding/buggy tour in the evening which was a lot of fun! Highlight was watching the sunset from the top of one of the peaks The next morning we got picked up early form the hostel for a tour of Isla Ballestes – an hour drive by minivan and then a 45 min boat ride till you get to the island wildlife sanctuary. Thousands of birds and sea-lions – it was amazing to get this close to the wildlife After getting back to Huacachina, we did some more exploring and decided to rent some ATV’s; shredding across miles of desert at sunset in these beasts was by far one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life! We drove back to Lima that evening with the return journey taking about 4 hours.

Huacachina Desert Oasis What I liked Most

Shredding across miles of desert in an ATV is by far one of the best things I've ever done in my life!

Huacachina Desert Oasis Pro Tips

  • Get a private room at Banana's Adventure Hostel. Each night includes 1 free tour - definitely choose sand boarding!
  • Bring your swimmers. It's super hot during the day, so you'll want to take a dip in the pool
  • Rent ATV's - expensive ($150 USD for 60 minutes) but WAY better than the sand boarding
