Hidden Gems In Salem, Massachusetts

If you’ve never been to Salem, MA, then you’ve certainly heard of it. Known for the Salem Witch Trials in 1692, Salem is home to many historical buildings and landmarks. They wear their history on their sleeve today, even calling their high school football team ‘The Witches’. There’s more to Salem than meets the eye, though. Here are five hidden gems that you shouldn’t miss out on when you’re in the area.

1. The Elizabeth Montgomery Statue

Samantha from hit TV show Bewitched is an iconic character. The unassuming housewife was actually a powerful witch, just looking to live a normal life with her husband Darren. This statue commemorates the character after a series of episodes were filmed on location right in Salem, after a fire burned down the TV set. It’s a brilliant spot for photos and selfies! Find the statue at the end of the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall.

2. The Satanic Temple Headquarters

It’s actually not that surprising that the Satanic Temple has their headquarters in Salem, MA, but it is surprising that it was only set up in 2016. The Satanic Temple, despite their name, aren’t actually a religious organization. In fact, they’re a group that actually advocate for the separation of church and state. Their headquarters features an art gallery that you can visit, which is full of exhibits that critique religion. Be aware that some of the content is mature.

3. Count Orlock’s Nightmare Gallery

This is a must for any horror movie fan visiting Salem. The gallery is packed full of life size replicas of monsters from movie history. Everyone’s in there, from Nosferatu, to the Universal monster gang, to Lind Blair from modern classic The Exorcist. Some of the exhibits were even created by the movie prop makers themselves. There’s lots of props and other exhibits from the movies too, so take some time to look around and take in some movie history.

4. Herb Mackey’s Metal Sculpture Yard

Head towards the Salem Ferry and you’ll soon see Herb Mackey’s yard, full of exciting and endearing metal sculptures. He considers making these sculptures from found objects a hobby, but many stop to appreciate his art. The best part is that some are up for sale! If there’s a price tag on it, you can leave the money in the mail slot and take that metal creature home with you.

5. Oregon State Hospital – Museum Of Mental Health

Finally, make some time to go check out this unusual attraction at the Oregon State Hospital. This museum takes you all the way through the beginning of mental health care, all the way to the present day. It’s amazing how far we’ve come in such a short space of time. You’ll also be interested to know that this hospital was the setting of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

These are just five hidden gems that you must find in Salem, Massachusetts. Come check them out. There’s much more to the area than just witches!
